Yorkshire is a big and beautiful county providing a variety of majestic countryside and spectacular seascapes, much of which is protected as National Parks or Heritage Coastline. Think of Yorkshire and, if it isn’t Headingly cricket or York races, its likely to be the Dales or Moors – unquestionably some of the finest upland scenery in England. It is proud of its past and a sense of history is never far away – be it castles and stately homes or the powerful industrial heritage that weave their evocative stories. Yorkshire will not disappoint!
ITINERARY
Monday - Morning departure from Dorset to Oxford for lunch. Continue northwards to arrive in Harrogate by late afternoon.
Tuesday - The beautiful Yorkshire Dales. First to Skipton, an attractive market town situated in the Aire Gap on the edge of the Dales National Park - it is centred on its castle and market square and offers a High Street full of quirky shops and craftmen's workshops. This afternoon make a scenic drive up the Wharfedale - characteristic dry stone walls and rolling dales, isolated farms and wildflower meadows. Continue to Ripon, a small city with a big personality, absorbing history and curious customs.
Wednesday - At leisure in Harrogate. Born through a boom in spa tourism during the Victorian 1800s, the town quickly developed a reputation for luxury breaks for body and soul. It is still true today and Harroagte boasts superb spas and is also known for its floral excellence, inspirational shopping and famous afternoon teas. A great place to discover.
Thursday - The spectacular North York Moors. This morning driver across the Vale of Thirsk to the pretty village of Helmsley where we pause for coffee. Continue to Pickering then onto a narrow high moors road through the spectacular rugged heather-clad scenery all the way to Whitby. With its ancient abbey, stunning coastline and delicious fresh fish & chips, Whitby is a classic seaside destination and we spend the afternoon here.
Friday - Homeward bound, we shall stop for lunch at the Heart of the Shires shopping village near Northampton. Return to Dorset by early evening.
