The world famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a spectacle of music, light and precision movement performed by the massed pipes and drums regiments.

Few places in Britain provide finer and purer light than Scotland, with utter clarity it illuminates a stunning landscape of forest, hills and lochs, peppered with fascinating heritage sites and historic towns.  This short-break includes a visit to Edinburgh’s famous Military Tattoo – a spectacle of music, light and precision movement performed by the massed pipes and drums of Scottish Regiments and units from around the World. The 100 minute long show is possibly the most stupendous on Earth and commands a TV audience of over 100 million – although there is absolutely no substitute for being there in person. When subtle lighting picks out the lone piper playing a lament on the castle ramparts, few in the audience fail to be moved by the atmosphere.

ITINERARY

THURSDAY - Early Morning departure from Dorset, driving northwards through the Midlands and past the Lakes to Peebles where tea/coffee & shortbread will welcome you while your bags are taken to the room. After settling in enjoy a delicious 3 course dinner with choices.

FRIDAY - Morning to explore your surroundings and maybe enjoy one of the walks around the grounds or exploit the hotel leisure facilities. We shall take an early lunch at the hotel (In lieu of dinner). Afternoon to Edinburgh, with time for sightseeing or shopping. Maybe visit the Castle, Gardens or Royal Yacht Britannia. You are free to source your own dinner in the city centre where you will be spoilt for choice. This evening take your seats for the famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo (side tiered seating with steps). The word "Tattoo" was adopted by British Army officers during the 1740s when they were based in Flanders, Belgium. It is derived from the Dutch phrase "tap toe", used to order bar owners to turn off the taps of their beer kegs so that drunken soldiers could return to their barracks. We shall return to hotel late that night.

SATURDAY - Enjoy a lie-in. Late-morning we visit Abbotsford near Melrose, the extraordinary home of 19th century novelist Sir Walter Scott - a rambling, whimsical and picturesque home he created over many years and packed full of treasures he collected. The surrounding gardens are a rare example of Regency layout and the wider estate offers relaxing walks through woodlands and riverside.

SUNDAY - Reluctantly leaving this beautiful corner of Britain to drive homewards, arriving back in Dorset that evening.
