England's very first National Park covering 555 square miles of magnificent Derbyshire countryside - made famous by the BBC's "Last of the Summer Wine"
Founded in 1951, the Peak District National Park was Englands very first, containing 555 square miles of stunning Derbyshire countryside. Made famous by the BBCs longest running sit-com The Last of the Summer Wine it is an area of great contrasts and interest that never fails to captivate and enthral. Both the natural landscapes and man-made heritage are amongst the finest anywhere, from deep green valleys to rugged desolate moors, peppered with chocolate box villages and magnificent stately homes a treasure chest of interest just waiting to be opened.
ITINERARY
Sunday - Morning departure from Dorset via motorways with stops as appropriate to arrive in Sheffield that afternoon. After settling in enjoy dinner in the restaurant.
Monday - Drive into the Peak District through forest, valleys and meadows - past the iconic Lady Bower Reservoir - we arrive at the picturesque village of Castleton in the Hope Valley. Narrow alleyways and winding streets with traditional stone cottages - a 15 minute walk will take you into the spectacular Cave Dale with its near perpendicular limestone cliffs. Later we continue to the plague village of Eyam - a guided village walking tour and entry to the fascinating museum. Our day ends in Bakewell, the attractive riverside town of charming courtyards and small shops, including the original
Bakewell Pudding shop.
Tuesday - Visit Chatsworth House "The Palace of the Peaks", magnificent home of The Duke of Devonshire. Includes a self-guided tour of the house, the breathtaking gardens and park, stunning water features, working farm and maze. This afternoon we pause in Matlock Bath, one of the first true tourist destinations it was dubbed "Little Switzerland" due to the magnificent views and steep wooded hillsides. It was plenty of quirky shops and cafes, a riverside promenade and gardens to enjoy.
Wednesday - Head deep into the Peak District past fields lined with gritstone walls and across wide heather clad moors to the elegant spa town of Buxton, highest market town in England at over 1000 feet. Tourist flock here for the thermal waters, Georgian architecture and Pavillion Gardens. This afternoon drive on a sweeping route over hill and down dale through Glossop, then turn onto the famous Snake Pass. Built by Thomas Telford and opened in 1821, this famous scenic route crosses the Pennines and takes its name from the isolated pub located along the way.
