Sheffield is a creative, diverse and original city - 61% is green space and one-third of it lies in the Peak District National Park - a place where wonderful and surpising things occur.

Like the eternal city of Rome, Sheffield is surrounded by seven hills which produces a compact space of human proportions. Unlike Rome, Sheffield’s entire area is 61% green space and one-third of the city lies within the scenic Peak District National Park. Despite being the UK’s fifth largest city it is estimated to contain over 250 parks, woodlands and gardens with over 4.5 million trees. Strong architectural themes from two centuries of manufacturing history make for a diverse city-scape where wonderful and surprising things occur. A creative, diverse and original city – Sheffield soul is in it’s sense of understated pride.

ITINERARY

Sunday - Morning departure from Dorset with stops for comfort as appropriate. Arrive Sheffield that afternoon with porterage of bags. Settle in to your room then enjoy dinner in the restaurant.

Monday - We are joined by a local guide who will escort a tour of the city (part coach and part walking) - an interesting, fun and informative journey through 900 years of Sheffield's history. You will see many key attractions including twin cathedrals and the town and city halls. There will be time to make your own discoveries in the regenerated city centre which offers much culture and heritage as well as greenspace. This afternoon we shall visit the Sheffield Botanical Gardens - opened in 1836 covering 19 acres with 5000 species of plants. Notable for their restored glass pavilions, water features, sculpture and over 16 distinct gardens.

Tuesday - Visit Kelham Island Museum and explore the story of making in Sheffield from master craftsmen to mass production. Experience life and work during the industrial revolution and see how industry forged the modern city. From transport to tools and handicrafts to homemakers - it's the story of the people of Sheffield. This afternoon we join a barge cruise on the Sheffield & Tinsley canal for a 2 hour heritage cruise back into yesteryear enjoying the waterside sights and hearing about the canal's rich history.

Wednesday - We drive into The Peak District and first stop is the plague village of Eyam where, during the Black Death of 1665 villagers selflessly isolated themselves. Their story is told in the fascinating museum and a guided tour of the small village reveals a fascinating history. This afternoon we drive over narrow dales roads through Sparrowpit and on the Rushup Edge to Buxton - source of the famous mineral water. Return through Bakewell.

Thursday - homewards bound to return to Dorset by late afternoon.
