The Costa Brava offers a unique experience with its mild weather and abundant sunshine. Even during March temperatures can top 20 degrees but the area is still quiet with tourists this early in the season and the summer crowds are yet to arrive. Visitors can enjoy the regions stunning natural beauty including the dreamlike coves and breathtaking interior landscapes that have inspired artists and poets. Undoubtedly a great place to enjoy the mediterranean climate and take in deep blue sea, golden beaches, medieval towns and natural parks and experience countless cultural influences from history. Our chosen resort of Pineda de Mar roughly translates as Pine Forest by the Sea and is a quiet seaside town occupying one of the longest beaches on the Costa Brava backed by the Montnegre Hills.
ITINERARY
(Specific order of days may be altered while in resort subject to prevailing local conditions)
Wednesday - Very early morning departure from Dorset to Folkestone for channel crossing to France and on to Dijon for overnight stay at Novotel Dijon Sud with dinner and breakfast.
Thursday - Resume southbound, crossing the border into Spain and arrive at Pineda de Mar in time for dinner.
Friday - At leisure in the resort. Get your bearings with time to relax and unwind.
Saturday - Visit Girona, a small city on a human scale - enjoy the old town with its narrow streets and squares, museums and historic buildings with over 2000 years of history.
Sunday & Monday - At leisure in resort. 30 mins walk to neighbouring Calella.
Tuesday - Visit the medieval fortified village of Peratellada, a national site of extraordinary appeal and beauty. It preserves its ancient feudal appearance with narrow streets and alleyways, castle and palace (some sites may be closed for winter but the town is fascinating to walk around - no entry fee)
Wednesday - At leisure in resort.
Thursday - Excursion to Barcelona - showcasing Catalonian life at its best - think cutting-edge architecture, trendsetting fashion and tasty tapas joints. To see the highlights maybe join a panoramic hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus tour with English commentary.
Friday - At leisure in resort
Saturday - First to Palamos, an authentic fishing village and holiday resort where everything bears the seal, the aroma and colour of the Mediterranean sea. Later stop in Blanes, a delightful resort far less touristy than many others on the Costa Brava - a place the locals like to visit.
Monday - We bid our hosts a fond farewell and drive back into France for overnight stay at Novotel Dijon Sud with dinner and breakfast.
Tuesday - Northwards to Calais for channel crossing to Folkestone and return to Dorset later that evening.
