Take in the dramatic landscapes of Norfolk with its charming market towns and picture postcard villages while viewed from a boat cruise and steam trains.
North Norfolk has always earned its living from the land and the sea, and this special relationship is apparent in every corner, from the towering opulent churches built on the profits of a thriving medieval wool trade to the fishing boats pulled up on the shore. This dramatic landscape is also a sanctuary for wildlife and is dotted with charming market towns and picture-postcard villages, where lovingly husbanded estates radiate around majestic stately homes none more renowned than Sandringham, former country retreat of HM The Queen. We have included two charming railway journeys and a boat cruise, which provide a whole new perspective and memorable views.
ITINERARY
Monday - Morning departure from Dorset to Marlow, Bucks. for lunch - an historic town with elegant suspension bridge spanning the River Thames. Continue across East Anglia to Norwich to arrive at our hotel in time for dinner. Porterage included.
Tuesday - Our day starts at the Bure Valley Railway - a 45 minute journey by steam train through the Norfolk countryside from Aylesham to Wroxham. On arrival there is a 15 minute leisurely walk to Wroxham Bridge with time for lunch. This afternoon make the short drive to Horning and join a 90 minute circular cruise of the Norfolk Broads aboard the Southern Comfort Paddle Boat - a replica double deck Mississippi style vessel with plush lounge, bar, toilet and commentary of the waterside sights.
Wednesday - Travel to Wymondham to board the Mid-Norfolk Heritage Railway for a one-way journey to Dereham. Sit back as the usually steam hauled train takes us through the delightful scenery. (NB: Mid-Norfolk railway has a special event planned for this day which means they can not take our group booking - we have swapped the trip onto the North Norfolk Steam Railway for a single journey from Sheringham to Holt. This afternoon we make our way to Sandringham, former country home of HM The Queen. Set in 24 hectares of stunning gardens, the house has guides in every room and the museum houses collections of Royal vehicles, ceramics, photos and memorabilia.
Thursday - Coach transfers in and out of Norwich will operate several times today so you can choose how long to spend in town. There is plenty to explore in this medieval city from cathedral and Saxon market place to museums and shops. Alternatively spend some time in the hotel pool or spa.
Friday - Homewards bound with a stop in St Albans a thriving and historic cathedral city for lunch. Resume to Dorset that afternoon returning by early evening.
