A faultless combination of impossibly beautiful scenery, impressive literary history, abundant wildlife and a rich cultural heritage Cumbria or The Lake District is arguably Englands finest landscape. From enormous lakes to sky-scraping mountains, ancient townships and pre-historic stone circles the attraction packed region is one of the countrys most popular tourist destinations, and justly so! We combine all this magnificence with the iconic Settle to Carlisle railway 72 miles, 20 viaducts, 14 tunnels and countless beautiful vistas including a crossing of the iconic Ribbleshead Viaduct.
ITINERARY
SUNDAY - Morning departure from Dorset with stops as appropriate for refreshment to arrive in Barrow late afternoon. After settling in dinner is served in the stylish restaurant. Later you can relax in the hotel bar or Wetherspoons is a 10 mins walk away.
MONDAY - Drive to Lakeside on Windermere and enjoy a spectacular cruise through some of England's most stunning scenery - fantastic views of the mountains, secluded bays and historic houses. Arriving in Bowness with time to soak up the atmosphere of this popular resort with its many attractions. Later tour via narrow lanes to the villages of Hawkshead and Coniston - quintessential Lake District with cobbled streets, pretty squares and whitewashed cottages.
TUESDAY - To the coastal village of Ravenglass where we board a steam train journey deep into the heart of Cumbria. Affectionately known as "La'al Ratty" the narrow gauge railway was built in 1873. Our 2 hour round trip includes time to explore the pretty village of Boot at the far end of the line. This afternoon we drive to Ulverston to visit the quirky Laurel & Hardy Museum housed in the former Roxy Cinema - a shrine to the comedy duo and close to a statue raised to their memory. A fascinating collection of memorabilia, films and facts - Stan Laurel was born in Ulverston in 1890.
WEDNESDAY - To the Yorkshire Dales village of Settle with time to explore. Just before midday we board a mainline train to travel across the iconic railway route from Settle to Carlisle - a journey that will have you reaching for your camera. Arrive in Carlisle 1hr 40 mins later with time to enjoy a little sightseeing - the cathedral is just a 10 minute walk. The coach will catch us up and return to the hotel later this afternoon.
THURSDAY - Homewards bound with stops as appropriate to return to Dorset late afternoon.
