Blackpool is universally recognised as the entertainment capital of the north - a heady blend of spectacular shows, endless beaches, weatherproof attractions, shops, piers, colourful trams and good old northern hospitality. Every autumn the town lights up with a dazzling display of coloured lights, lasers and optics – a magical sight referred to as “The Greatest Free Show on Earth!”
Our holiday also includes a sightseeing tour to Cumbria to view the impossibly beautiful lakes, mountains and ancient townships of The Lake District. Possibly the highlight will be a journey on the famous Settle-Carlisle railway – 73 miles long crossing 21 viaducts and 14 tunnels built by manpower and dynamite alone – an awesome engineering achievement!
ITINERARY
Monday - Morning departure from Dorset via motorways with stops for refreshment as appropriate to arrive Blackpool late afternoon. A welcome cuppa while your bags are portered to the rooms.
Tuesday - Touring the Lake District: Windermere for morning coffee. Drive up the Kirkstone Pass to Ullswater and on to Keswick for lunch. Turn back to Ambleside with a little free time before returning to Blackpool. Picture-postcard, majestic and inspiring scenery all day long.
Wednesday - A day at leisure in Blackpool to explore its countless attractions and distractions. Make time to visit at least one of the 3 piers, maybe catch a tram along the six miles of seafront, call into the majestic Tower Ballroom or ride the lift up to the Tower Skywalk (if you dare!). Visit Madame Tussauds waxworks, the rides of the Pleasure Beach, Blackpool Zoo …. the options are endless!
Thursday - Drive to Carlisle with time for lunch. This afternoon board a train on the Carlisle-Settle Line. The route crosses remote scenic regions of the Cumbrian Fells and Yorkshire Dales completed in 1876 and threatened with closure many times but still popular with tourists. There is a little time to enjoy the bustling dales town of Settle while the coach catches you up, then re-board to drive back to Blackpool.
Friday - Homeward bound to return to Dorset that evening.
