The Northern Pennines and North Yorkshire Dales provide unparalleled landscapes and momentous history that shaped the people, geography and culture of the area.

A remarkable region that is so often overlooked on the rush northwards to Scotland – the Northern Pennines and North Yorkshire Dales provide unparalleled landscapes and momentous history that has shaped the people, geography and culture of the area. One of England’s most special places: open heather moors, attractive dales and hay meadows, tumbling rivers, distinctive fauna and floral. The UNESCO heritage site of Durham is another highlight. Those who crave culture won’t be disappointed either with one of the UK’s best gallery museums to enjoy.

This afternoon drive via a narrow dales road bordered by dry-stone walls to view Pendragon Castle - a ruin in Mallerstang Dale that legend has it was built by Uther Pendragon, farther of King Arthur. At Brough join the A66 eastbound that sweeps across the wide open moorlands - a spectacular Roman Road that returns us to Scotch Corner.

Sunday - To Durham - the entire city is a conservation area and UNESCO heritage site. In addition to the spectacular cathedral and castle there are beautiful schools, colleges, churches and spectacular bridges . A boat cruise on the river provides stunning views.

Monday - Bishop Auckland is another town crammed full of historic buildings including Auckland Castle, residence of the Prince Bishops.
