Yorkshire is a big and beautiful county providing a variety of majestic countryside, much of which is protected as National Parks. It is proud of its past and a sense of history is never far away. On this tour of Yorkshire we have included a scenic boat cruise and a nostalgic steam train journey that each afford a whole new perspective and memorable views not available to road passengers. However the highlight is sure to be a main-line train journey on the iconic and legendary Settle-Carlisle railway, undoubtedly the most beautiful and spectacular line in the UK.

ITINERARY

Sunday - Morning departure from Dorset with stops for refreshment en-route to Harrogate where a welcome cuppa and porterage awaits.

Monday - A scenic tour through the beautiful Yorkshire Dales via Pateley Bridge and Grassington. Roads meander between drystone walls and a patchwork of hay meadows overlooked by heather clad moorlands. Stop in Skipton, an attractive market town situated in the Aire Gap on the edge of the Dales National Park - it is centred on it's castle and market square. This afternoon board a luxury canal boat to enjoy a 2 hour cruise on the Leeds-Liverpool canal with a cream tea included.
There are picturesque views and fascinating history accompanied by a commentary and fresh scones - perfect!

Tuesday - This morning visit Ilkley set in beautiful Wharfedale, a former spa town with a rich architectural heritage of elegant buildings. It is renowned for its fresh air, beautiful scenery and has a lovely riverside walk and park. Continue to Haworth, famous hillside home of the Bronte family, an undisputed literary mecca. With its steep cobbled main street, iconic parsonage, rolling moors and vintage charm it feels like you've stepped into another time. This afternoon join the Keighley and Worth Valley Heritage Railway - famous as the film set of The Railway Children - for a single journey from Haworth to Keighley. Classic locomotives and vintage carriages with restored period stations create a nostalgic ride through the stunning scenery.

Wednesday - Drive across Yorkshire to the pretty town of Settle, close to the border with Lancashire. Here we join the famous Settle-Carlisle main-line railway. The 73 mile long route crosses remote scenic regions of the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbrian Fells by way of 21 viaducts and 14 tunnels - completed in 1876 and built using manpower and dynamite alone! (journey time approx. 1 ¾ hours). There is a little free time on arrival in Carlisle (cathedral/castle 10 mins walk from station). Coach returns from Carlisle passing Penrith - Barnard Castle - Scotch Corner.

Thursday - enjoy a day at leisure in elegant Harrogate. Betty's Tea Room is an institution and serves afternoon tea on fine bone china - a luxurious experience you will need to pre-book.

Friday - Homewards with comfort stops as appropriate to arrive back in Dorset early evening.
