The Pennine Hills were formerly at the very heart of the industrial revolution - now an area that offers spectacular scenery, cultural and nostalgic experiences.

The Pennine Hills form a great 200 mile “backbone” running the length of northern England. High moorland, wooded valleys and rolling green fields provide the backdrop to a landscape highly influenced by human activity, yet none the less attractive for it. Within these scenic hills nestle historic mill towns and pretty villages – formerly an area at the very heart of the industrial revolution – now one that offers a wealth of cultural and nostalgic experiences.

ITINERARY

Monday - Morning departure from Dorset, heading north with a stop in the Midlands for lunch. Resume the Huddersfield with porterage and a welcome drink on arrival. After settling in enjoy dinner.

Tuesday - Transfer into Huddersfield town centre - a masterpiece of Victorian civic architecture with one of the highest number of listed buildings in the UK. Even the market is housed under an impressive cast iron and glass canopy. Take a walking tour and you will discover many fine buildings and stories. This afternoon we shall visit Canon Hall Farm, as featured on TV - the barns are all undercover and give an insight into modern farming. You can view the animals and farmers going about business from special viewing platforms. Who will you see - Dave, Rob, Pony Hadley or awkward Orchid?

Wednesday - The beautiful Yorkshire Dales. First to Skipton, an attractive market town situated in the Aire Gap on the edge of the Dales National Park - it is centred on its castle and market square and offers a High Street full of quirky shops and craftmen's workshops. This afternoon call into Grassington with its narrow cobbled alleyways and dales visitor centre. Later make a scenic drive of characteristic dry stone walls and rolling dales, isolated farms and wildflower meadows to Pateley Bridge. Return to hotel.

Thursday - Visit Holmefirth in the Derbyshire Peak District for a taste of "Summer Wine". Enjoy homemade cakes in the Wrinkled Stocking Tea Room next to Nora Batty's steps or pop into one of many art and craft shops. This afternoon take a circular scenic drive through the Peak District via Lady Bower Reservoir - Snake Pass Inn - Saddleworth Moor back to hotel.

Friday - Homewards bound via motorways with stops for refreshment as appropriate. Return to Dorset early evening.
