Holland is much more than just a spring-time tourist destination and after the short-lived tulips have faded the picture perfect watreside towns, their history and heritage remains to be discovered. To further enhance your visit we have combined a historical steam train journey with a cruise aboard the vintage museum ship MS Friesland. A classic Holland experience - the train is beautifully restored and over 100 years old. the Fiesland was built in 1956 and is now a floating museum. A tasteful "travel through time" and an unforgettable experience.
ITINERARY
Friday - Very early morning departure from Dorset to Dover for 10am channel crossing to Dunkirk. Resume through Belgium and into Holland. Arrive Lelystad with porterage of bags on arrival and dinner.
Saturday - Today we head across the Houtribdijk - a 27km long dike which crosses what used to be the Zuider See and is now the Ijsselmeer - the largest inland lake in Europe. Look out for the radio station halfway across. Arrive at Enkhuizen and board the museum ship MS Friesland for a 1½ hour cruise to Medemblik with coffee & pastry included onboard. There will be free time here to explore the beautiful historical centre of the town. Later join the famous little steam train that travels through the delightful Dutch countryside while a coffee and apple tart is served to you. The train terminates at the historic port of Hoorn - reboard the coach for journey back to hotel.
Sunday - This morning we shall visit the charming traditional town of Edam, home to the famous cheese. We then make our way to the delightful village of Volendam for lunch - the prettiest and most popular fishing village on the Ijsselmeer. Traditional costume is still worn here. This afternoon we call at Simonehoeve cheese and clogs factory, where we are shown the process of clog making and a chance to sample different varieties of cheeses.
Monday - Visit Amsterdam, a fascinating and exciting city often referred to as "The Venice of the North". Its cobblestone lanes wrapped around arched bridges and canals makes it a charming place to visit. A boat cruise is the best way to discover its many sights, although being so compact and flat walking is easy too. If you wish to visit some of the most popular attractions such as the Anne Frank House or Van Gogh Museum we recommend booking in advance as queues can be long.
Tuesday - Leaving Lelystad after breakfast to head back to Dunkirk for afternoon channel crossing to Dover and return to Dorset that evening.
