The Pearl of the Rhine has all the ingredients for an unforgettable holiday: vine clad hills, picturesque valleys, quaint towns and romantic mountain-top castles.
The Rhine itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, originating in Switzerland and flowing to the sea in Holland, it provides a source of constant interest with all manner of shipping passing up and down stream. Boppard has a premier location right on the river bank and looks back on 2000 years of history. Our 4 star hotel is a Bluebird favourite offering Art Nouveau décor, a spa with pool and gourmet cuisine. Built in 1887 and family run for over 130 years, it successfully combines traditional service with modern luxury.
Itinerary
Saturday - Morning departure from Dorset via channel crossing to France for overnight stay at Mercure Hotel in Lille with set dinner and American buffet breakfast.
Sunday - Continue through Belgium and Luxembourg crossing into Germany with a stop in Trier, on the banks of the Moselle and Germanys oldest city. It is rife with attractions for architecture lovers and history buffs and offers a boozy cultural wine trail. Continue down the Moselle Valley passing Cochem, a showpiece gem and finally to our hotel in Boppard.
Monday - A day at leisure in Boppard - relax and enjoy the hotels facilities, stroll along the Rhine promenade, enjoy the bustling historic streets with their stylish shops and cafes or maybe join a boat cruise on the river. The chairlift up to the summit of the Gedeonseck is not to be missed and offers a fabulous view of the loop in the Rhine.
Tuesday - Cross the river by ferry - drive south through the Rhine Gorge, passing the famous Lorelei Rock, to Rudesheim. A charming town of countless attractions including the Drosselgasse - a narrow alley full of wine taverns, a mechanical music museum, another spectacular chairlift, and picture postcard buildings. This afternoon we shall pause in St Goar, a bewitching town with lovely preserved medieval heart, overlooked by several mysterious castles and having the world's largest free hanging cuckoo clock.
This evening after dinner we partake of 5 selected Rhine wine samples in the hotels historic cellar.
Wednesday - Visit the walled city of Koblenz with its winding streets and squares. A number of museums covers a broad spectrum of topics and Germanys first tri-cable car can carry you over the river with incomparable views of the world heritage site. Later we drive up the pretty Lahn Valley to the ancient town of Bad Ems, renowned as a glamourous Royal spa resort with curative mineral springs in the heart of a Nature Park.
Thursday - Homeward bound through Belgium to Calais and cross-channel crossing to Folkestone.
Return to Dorset late that night.
