Based in the historic town of Bury St Edmunds, the home of Saint Edmund who was the original patron saint of England. In medieval times The Abbey of St Edmund was one of the largest and most powerful Benedictine monasteries in the country with pilgrims coming from across Europe to visit his shrine. The town is surrounded by beautiful scenery and has over 1,000 years of history to discover in its narrow cobbled streets. Nearby are delightful Suffolk villages, many with a legacy of preserved half-timbered medieval houses. In contrast the city of Cambridge demonstrates sumptuous architecture in its universities and cathedral a treasure trove of sights and attractions you wont want to miss!
Itinerary
Sunday - Morning departure from Dorset with rest breaks as appropriate to arrive Bury St Edmunds with a welcome cuppa while the bags are portered. After settling in enjoy a 3 course dinner with tea/coffee to follow.
Monday - Visit neaby Ickworth House, a grand 18th century palace designed to impress and showcase the many treasures and art collected by the Earl Bishop. The immaculate Italianate gardens encircle the stunning Rotunda of the house and in the wider estate are wildflower meadows, a fernery and areas of woodland rich in wildlife. After time for lunch in the café we shall drive to the Suffolk village of Lavenham, with its narrow alleyways, quirky shops and gaily coloured skewwhiff buildings - it's a joy! Later call at Long Melford "The stateliest town in Suffolk" with an outstanding main street, 13th century market cross and impressive Holy Trinity Church.
Tuesday - A relaxing day to explore Bury St Edmunds. We shall start with a guided tour of the Cathedral, originating from the 11th century and progressively rebuilt, it contains stunning stained glass, statues, paintings and an exquisite vaulted ceiling. After time to view the ruined monastery and Abbey gardens the rest of the day is free for you to enjoy the cobbled streets of Bury St Edmunds - a true "foodie" town.
Wednesday - This morning we shall join a 2 hour guided walking tour of Cambridge which will include city highlights and the magnificent university. A wonderful introduction to the city, its history and the people who have lived and worked here.
