After being abandoned for 39 years the iconic Battersea Power Station has been regenerated and renovated at a cost of £39 billion - a gargantuan retail, lesiure and residential complex for London.
The heritage and history of Battersea Power Station is in the buildings DNA, with the building's past continuing to be celebrated into its future. The restoration and repurposing of the building is a major achievement and comes after several previous schemes collapsed. A new tube station has been constructed to serve the development - Battersea Power Station on the Northern Line, which opened last year. 1.75 million handmade bricks were ordered from the original brickmakers in Gloucestershire to replace worn masonary. The legendary and iconic landmark has now been brought back to life with a unique blend of shops, restuarants, bars, leisure and entertainment venues, parks and historical spaces.
The Grade 2 listed structure has opportunity to learn about the buildings history and remarkable story of transformation - PLACE PLAQUES inside and out provide insight and anecdotes, An Exhibition "POWER OF PLACE" includes a scale model and story of redevelopment, Original pieces of MACHINERY are used as sculptural displays, A LEARNING HUB in Grosvenor Railway Arch depicts the building's role in powering London in the 20th century, TEAM BATTERSEA ALUMNI includes a short film capturing personal stories of the power stations' workers.
LIFT 109** will provide an experience like no other - an elevator starts from an exhibition in the Art Deco Turbine Hall A and rises up through the chimney to 109 metres in the sky affording unique views across the capital.
CONTROL ROOM B** has been transformed into a cocktail bar surrounded by the original dials, desks and switchgear restored to their formal glory. The centre piece bar plays tribute to the character and form of the power station fusing British mid-century aesthetics with the beauty of Brutalism and dynamism of mechanics.
