England's very first National Park covering 555 square miles of magnificent Derbyshire countryside - made famous by the BBC's "Last of the Summer Wine"

No one remembers how The Peak District got its name – certainly not from the landscape of hills and valleys, wild moorland and gritstone escarpments, but no peaks! The most popular theory is it came from the Pecsaetan, an Anglo-Saxon tribe who once lived here. Founded in 1951, the Peak District National Park was England’s first, with 555 square miles of magnificent Derbyshire countryside. Made famous by the BBC’s longest running sitcom “The Last Of The Summer Wine” it is an area of contrasts and interest that never fails to captivate and enthrall.

ITINERARY

Sunday - Morning departure from Dorset to arrive Wortley Hall (Nr.Sheffield) with a welcome tea/coffee on arrival. After settling in enjoy dinner.

Monday - After breakfast we shall enjoy a guided tour of Wortley Hall and the beautiful gardens.
Mid-morning drive to Chesterfield, The Gateway to the Peaks, a bustling market town famous for its twisted spire Parish Church. After dinner a guest speaker will enlighten us to the history of Wortley Hall and its fascinating story.

Tuesday - Head deep into The Peak District past fields lined with gritstone walls and across wide open heather clad moors with spectacular views to the elegant spa town of Buxton. Tourists flock to the town for its thermal waters, Georgian architecture and Pavilion Gardens. Later continue to the magnificent and stately Chatsworth House, The Palace of The Peaks, home to the Duke of Devonshire and passed down through 16 generations. Explore 30 rooms, the 105 acre gardens, and the estate farm. After dinner enjoy bingo or a quiz in the lounge.

Wednesday - Explore Summer Wine Country today. Holmfirth, a lovely quirky market town, is home to Nora Batty's steps, Sid's café and Compos home. Our tour coach is too big for the narrow lanes that surround Holmfith so we have hired a narrow bodied replica vintage bus to take you on a guided tour of the filming locations - a fascinating trip. Return via the scenic Snake Pass and the reservoirs where the Dam Busters trained in WW2.

Thursday - Homeward bound, we pause briefly in Oxford for lunch, to return to Dorset by early evening.
