This is an irresistible and novel way of enjoying the blend of natural beauty and traditional experiences that make up a memorable holiday in Derbyshire.  We have included four very different railway centres that are preserving our steam, diesel and electric railway heritage as well as one of the best model railways in the UK. Whatever your memories of Britain’s Railways you will be amazed at the lengths these people go to, to make sure we do not lose them. 

ITINERARY


THURSDAY - Morning departure from Dorset, we pause in Oxford for lunch, then head northwards to Derby. Porterage provided in/out.

FRIDAY - This morning to Cromford Mills, nestled in the dales it is part of the Derwent Valley UNESCO heritage site - it had the first water-powered cotton mill and changed the world in the 18th century. The visitor centre details over 20 things to see and do and includes a video show. This afternoon to the Crich Tramway Village - a unique place to visit. Trams run to and fro every few minutes as visitors ride over the cobbles of the period street and into the countryside. The tram museum, workshop viewing gallery and unlimited tram rides are all included.

SATURDAY - This morning visit Barrow Hill Roundhouse Railway Centre - the engine shed with its turntable and extensive rail yards were rescued from dereliction and now house a collection of heritage locomotives and rolling stock. Lunch is taken in Chesterfield with a little time to enjoy the town centre. This afternoon drive to Peak Rail near Matlock and running heritage steam and diesel trains. At the Rowsley terminus you can view the LMS Carriage Association, Heritage Shunters Trust and the Engine Shed. A round trip on the line takes just under one hour and traverses the Cawdor Viaduct over the River Derwent.

SUNDAY - Today we visit The Midland Railway at Butterly. Steam and diesel hauled trains are operated around the huge site which includes the main museum, restored station buildings, diesel depot, demonstration signal box, "Tin Tabernacle" Victorian church, the Golden Valley Light Railway, a 35 acre Country Park and Farm, Historic locomotives and rolling stock. Return to Derby by mid-afternoon with time to visit the Famous Trains model railway exhibition in Markeaton Park - a huge 00 scale model railway housed in an old council rail depot.

MONDAY - Homeward bound to return to Dorset by late afternoon.
