Both the natural landscapes and man-made heritage are amongst the finest anywhere, and the area has many unique customs and traditions which add an interesting twist to any visit here. Combine all the stunning countryside with a rich historical heritage and the many attractive dales towns, and you have a treasure chest of interest just waiting to be opened Derbyshire certainly will not disappoint!
Itinerary
Monday - Morning departure from Dorset, we pause en-route for lunch. Resume northwards that afternoon to Stockport and after settling in enjoy dinner in the restaurant.
Tuesday - Drive across the Peak District National Park - first stop is the "plague village" of Eyam and its fascinating museum. Continue to Chesterfield with time to marvel at the famous twisted church spire. Later continue to the Palace of the Peak - Chatsworth House, magnificent home of the Duke of Devonshire. Includes a self guided tour of the house, the breathtaking gardens & park, stunning water features, working farm, gift shop and maze.
Wednesday - This morning via the twisting Cat & Fiddle Pass to visit Buxton, the cultural capital of Derbyshire and Jewel of the Peak District. The town is blessed with beautiful architecture and the world famous spa water. After lunch take a scenic drive through the magnificent High Peaks by way of Bakewell, with a stop for tarts, Lady Bower Reservoir, Snake Pass Inn and Glossop.
Thursday - Visit Holmfirth, renowned location for TV's Last of the Summer Wine, a traditional village of stone cottages, narrow ginnels, steep steps and mills. Visitors flock to see Nora Battys house and Sids café. Later we drive over the infamous Saddleworth Moor to the Fletcher Moss Botanic Gardens near Didsbury - covering 90 acres this public park is part formal garden and part nature reserve in all its unsuspecting yet magical glory!
Friday - We bid a fond farewell to this delightful corner of England and head homewards, stopping as appropriate for refreshments, to return to Dorset late that afternoon.
