Stretching from Carmarthen Bay in the south to the Cambrian Mountains in the north, with wondrous gardens, awe-inspiring architecture, Wales’s longest beaches, and market towns brimming with local produce and chic shopping. Carmarthenshire has historical monuments, wonders of nature and a bountiful harvest of food that has led to it being known as The Garden of Wales. Follow in the footsteps of Welsh Princes at ancient castles and discover the region’s great literary heritage at Laugharne, inspirational home of renowned poet Dylan Thomas. A beautiful county of great contrasts, you will be surprised to encounter such diversity of landscapes at every turn, but what will stay constant is the “croeso cynnes” – the warm Welsh welcome!

Itinerary

Sunday - Morning departure from Dorset across the Severn Bridge and stop in Caerphilly with time for lunch and to view the largest castle fortress in Wales. Continue to Llanelli with a welcome cuppa on arrival and porterage of bags to the rooms.

Monday - Enjoy the beautiful scenery of The Gower Peninsula and The Mumbles - renowned for its sandy beaches, wild moors and stunning cliffs. We shall visit the Gower Heritage Centre housed in a converted water mill - a local guide will join us for a coach tour of The Gower and show us the highlights.

Tuesday - Visit the National Botanic Garden of Wales near Llanarthne, a 568-acre parkland has historic and futuristic buildings, horticultural displays, flower meadows and water features. The centre-piece is an amazing Great Glasshouse containing a Mediterranean landscape. This afternoon drive to the Gwili Steam Railway, set in beautiful countryside with abundant wildlife, the line follows the River Gwili on a 90 minute round trip.

Wednesday - To the pretty village of Kidwelly, whose castle rising above the River Gwendraeth is the medieval fortress of everyone's dreams - it appears in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" film. After time to admire its magnificent walls, towers, gatehouse and drawbridge continue to the charming village of Laugharne - a sleepy, timeless and tranquil town immortalised by the poet Dylan Thomas. Here you can see his home, his grave and the famous wooden boathouse where he created so many powerful works. This afternoon we visit the Bishops Palace and Park in Abergwili where the Museum of Carmarthenshire offers 50,000 years of local history and surprises aplenty!

Thursday - Homeward bound, we shall visit St Fagan's National Museum of History near Cardiff - over 50 historical Welsh buildings have been relocated here and frozen in time. Resume back to Dorset that afternoon, returning by early evening.
