The largest range of unbroken forested mountains between the Atlantic Ocean and the Urals - an unspoilt region and Germany's first National Park.
Germanys Bavarian Forest is the largest range of forested mountains between the Atlantic Ocean and the Urals yet it remains largely unknown to mass tourism. Partly because of its remote location and the fact that most roads came to a dead-end at the Iron Curtain the border between Germany and Czechoslovakia. It is an area of striking unspoiled beauty, much of it untouched by human development and was Germanys first National Park. Medieval trading routes between Bavaria and the Habsburg Kingdom have left traces of a fascinating history ruined castles, beautiful churches, and intricate glass production to name a few. The highlight of any visit to the forest is a guided walk through the highest echelons of the treetop canopy and ascending a 120 feet tall spiral viewing platform to be rewarded with incredible views.
ITINERARY
Sunday - Very early morning departure from Dorset via channel crossing to Calais and through France for overnight hotel stop at Reims. 3 course set menu dinner and breakfast included.
Monday - Over the mighty Rhine and across Southern Germany into Bavaria. We are welcomed to Honenau and the bags are portered. After settling in enjoy a delicious 3 course dinner (set menu on arrival day - choices on all others)
Tuesday - A scenic drive through Bavaria's wintry countryside, passing the Grosser Arber, the regions highest mountain. Our journey brings us to Bodenmais, where we shall visit Joska World Crystal - a sparkling theme-park of glass where glass blowers demonstrate the traditional skills and you can have a go yourself. Later this afternoon we shall take a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the snowy forest with a visit to a skiing hut with snacks and live music provided.
Wednesday - Visit the city of Passau, where a local guide will escort us on a discovery walk and uncover the history and culture of the town which sits at the confluence of 3 rivers. The old town is famed for its baroque architecture and the onion shaped domes of its cathedral towers. A 13th century hill-top fortress now houses the city museum and overlooks the River Danube. It is a romantic city and is sure to enthrall you. On return to our hotel this evening we shall enjoy a magical guided torch-lit walk around the village with mulled wine to follow.
Thursday - This morning call at a Husky farm, with a guided tour focusing on the housing, feeding and training of the dogs. Enjoy a hot drink here before heading out on a stunning guided walk through the treetops in the village of Neuschonau on the edge of the Bavarian Forest. You will make your way through the highest echelons of the forest , pausing to learn and explore along the way, then ascend the 120 feet tall viewing platform. This is a beautiful piece of architecture, a huge wooden spiral that guides you gently up - formed around a gigantic living tree - which finally emerges above the tree-line and reveals a stunning panorama.
Friday - We bid our kind hosts a fond farewell and head back across Germany for overnight stay in Reims with 3 course set menu dinner and breakfast.
Saturday - Homewards via Calais and afternoon channnel crossing into UK. Return to Dorset late that evening.
