We shall ride Europes oldest cog railway, relax on a boat cruise on Lake Achen and take a cable car ride to the summit of Germanys highest mountain.
Itinerary
Tuesday - Very early morning departure from Dorset via Eurotunnel crossing to Calais and through France for overnight stay at Mercure Hotel Saarbrucken Sud. A welcome drink on arrival while the bags are portered and dinner is taken in the restaurant this evening (set menu).
Wednesday - Cross the Rhine Valley and drive through Southern Germany, climbing into the Alps to arrive at our hotel in Tyrol for 5 night stay. Porterage, 3 course dinner with a choice and tea/coffee, continental buffet breakfast and use of leisure facilities all included.
Thursday - Visit Innsbruck - just 15 minutes drive away from our hotel the city is compact and comfortably explored on foot. Streets full of Imperial elegance and beautiful Baroque and Gothic architecture are impressive but never intimidating. Such magnificent sights as the iconic Golden Roof (c1500), the Imperial Palace, Triumphal Arch and the Alpen Zoo will keep you enthralled. A sightseeing tour by horse and carriage is a treat and the coachmen enjoy showing you their city.
Friday - Enjoy a day in the neighbouring Tyrolean village of Hall - one of the best preserved medieval towns in Austria and a hidden gem. Stroll around its narrow alleyways, cobbled streets and squares - thankfully a bombardment during WW2 missed the old town and most of the original buildings were spared. A salt mine brought the town riches from the 13th century and in the 15th century it was home to the Tyrolean Mint, producing silver coins - there is a fascinating coin museum in the town.
Saturday - This morning we embark on the Achenseebahn, Europe's oldest cog railway (opened 1889) which is still steam operated. Puffing through the steeper sections it rises to a 16% gradient from Jenbach to Seespitz - 7km and over 440 metres of elevation, an engineering marvel. At Seespitz rejoin the coach for the short drive along the lake shore to Pertisau. Here your next experience awaits - a relaxing cruise on the clear waters of Lake Achensee to Scholastika on the northern shore, taking in spectacular alpine views.
Sunday - Maybe the highlight of your holiday - we save the best till last. Take an amazing journey to the top of Germany's highest mountain, the majestic Zugspitze - at 2962 metres tall the German/Austria border runs through its summit. We start our ascent from the Austrian side on a stunning cable car journey from Ehrwald, taking in some of the most dramatic views. We shall spend some time at the summit admiring the 400 mountain peaks spanning 4 countries visible on a clear day. We shall then descend the German side of the mountain by cable car, before switching to a cog-wheel train which transports us to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. A town of extraordinary beauty it is accustomed to rendering visitors speechless!
Monday - After breakfast we commence our journey homewards back into Germany for overnight stay at Mercure Hotel Saarbrucken with dinner and breakfast.
Tuesday - Driving across France to Calais where we join a Eurotunnel crossing to Folkestone and so back to Dorset by late evening.
