PEMBROKESHIRE

5 Day Tour

Monday 28th July to Friday 1st August

The sea cliffs and sandy bays of south-west Dyfed form such a spectacular part of Britain that in 1952 almost all of it was designated a National Park.  186 miles of stunning coastline never fails to exhilarate visitors to this best-kept secret of Wales – an area boasting not only dramatic scenery, but historic monuments and castles, an extensive range of attractions and charming towns and seaside resorts.  If you like your landscaped untouched by the ravages of time where nature still reigns supreme, this is the tour for you.

FISHGUARD BAY HOTEL, Fishguard

(Replaces The Cliff Hotel originally advertised as the venue for this tour, but on inspection by our company representatives found to be unsuitable)

Nestling in rich woodland high above the harbour and affording sensational views of the coastline, the Fishguard Bay Hotel is steeped in history and occupies magnificent buildings.  It offers an atmosphere second to none – oak panelling, high ceilings and an air of yesteryear, combined with warm hospitality, superb service and comfort .  The hotels reputation for fine food makes it a popular venue, and the lounge bar is a nice place to relax in the evening.  All bedrooms have private bathroom and the usual expected amenities of a three star hotel – most parts are accessible by lift.

ITINERARY

MONDAY – Morning departure from Dorset, over the Severn Bridge and into Wales.

Past Swansea and Carmarthen to Gwbert-on-Sea near Cardigan.

TUESDAY – morning visit to Cardigan, an ancient market town and port on the Teifi estuary.  The slow pace of life hereabouts has helped preserve the character and charm of the town, its narrow streets, traditional shops, and indoor market.  This afternoon we visit Bro Meigan Gardens, 6½ acres of grounds ranging from wild dingle to more formal borders – much work has been done to encourage Mother Nature, with a wide variety of wildlife throughout the gardens.  Later we call at the National Coracle Centre at Cenarth – housed in a preserved 17th century flour mill and situated next to the beautiful Cenarth Falls, 200 year old bridge and salmon leap.

WEDNESDAY - A visit to St Davids, smallest city in Britain – see the remarkable cathedral built during the 12th century and view the ruined Bishop’s Palace.  A short walk will be richly rewarded with stunning sea views and abundant marine wildlife. Later call at Solva Woollen Mill, one of Wales last working mills specialising in traditional rugs and floor coverings – see the looms working and bobbins winding!

THURSDAY - A visit to Tenby, Pembrokeshire’s leading resort set on a rocky promontory overlooking two beautiful bays.  The narrow streets lead down to a pretty harbour from where boat cruises leave for Caldy Island.  In the afternoon we take “The most beautiful drive in Pembrokeshire” via Pembroke, with its impressive castle – Angel Bay – Merrion – Bosherston, with maybe time to visit the water lily gardens.

FRIDAY – Homeward bound, with lunch taken in the vibrant city of Cardiff, to arrive back in Dorset by early evening.
