Traditionally held once every 10 years, the world famous Oberammergau passion play is scheduled to be performed again in 2010.   In 1633 Bavaria was swept by plague.  The local elders vowed that if the village were purged they would “keep the Passion tragedy every 10 years”.  The epidemic came to a standstill and the villagers have, despite dangers and threats,  fulfilled the promise ever since.  Pilgrims from all over the world are captivated by the Play, which is not only a testimony of religious faith but also an outstanding cultural event.  Although the text and music have been adapted over the years, the traditional concept remains intact – with inner conviction the amateur actors, all local people, represent time and again the life, sufferings and resurrection of Our Lord.   The music was originally composed in the early 19^th century and has been revised and extended since.  It employs a large choir and orchestra that frames the entire spectacle.  The Play shows the story of Christ’s Passion, beginning with the entry into Jerusalem and ending with the Resurrection.  In a change from previous arrangements the shows will run from 2 pm to 10 pm, with a three hour break for dinner.  Meals and local bus transport around the village are included in our package, making the whole day a relaxing, as well as uplifting, experience. 

Following the visit to Oberammergau we shall be moving to a second centre at St. Anton in the Austrian Tirol with inclusive excursions of the stunning Alpine scenery, visiting Innsbruck, Switzerland and the fairytale  castles of Bavaria.  A full itinerary will be available on request detailing accommodation arrangements and sightseeing.
