BLUEBIRD Holidays 2008

LIVERPOOL - The Mersey Beat

3 Days -

Wednesday 20th to Friday 22nd August

Liverpool stands at the heart of Merseyside – an exciting and diverse region characterised by the romance of the river Mersey and world famous as the home of The Beatles.  The city has been awarded “European Capital of Culture 2008” and will host a series of landmark events throughout this year to show off its incredible riches – unrivalled sporting experiences; rich cultural heritage; stunning architecture and of course, unmatched musical talent.  On this busy break we will give you a flavour of what the city has to offer, uncover some fascinating history, explore its most famous sons, and discover just why it is that no other city in the world has produced quite so many Number One hit singles!

BRITANNIA ADELPHI HOTEL, Liverpool

Built for the launch of the Titanic in 1914, The Adelphi was intended to offer uncompromising luxury, comfort and ambience.  It has been faithfully restored to provide every modern facility in a traditional setting – its lofty ceilings, marble pillars, oak panelled walls and fine furnishings are a spectacular “throw-back” to past grandeur.  All guest bedrooms are now equipped with private bathroom, telephone, colour tv, trouser press, hairdryer and tea tray to four star standard, but still retain their original character.  With 3 distinctive restaurants and two comfortable bars there is no need to step out of this luxury venue.  For the energetic there is a state of the art health club including gym, heated pool, jacuzzi, sauna and beauty salon (small fee payable).

ITINERARY

WEDNESDAY – Early morning departure from Dorset to Liverpool, arriving in time to take lunch at the redeveloped Albert Dock, one of the city’s top cosmopolitan and heritage centres. That afternoon join an hours cruise on the famous Mersey Ferries – cross the Mersey and explore the waterside of both banks enjoying sights that can only be seen from the water.  A commentary accompanies the trip.  Later we check-in to our hotel.

THURSDAY – We return to Albert Dock for more time to fully appreciate the attractions this stunning architectural triumph has to offer.  A visit to “The Beatles Story”  is included where you can experience the most sensational pop story ever known!  In the afternoon we shall be joined by a local guide for “A Magical Mystery Tour” – a two hour tour that takes us around all the landmarks made famous by The Fab Four – including their homes, schools, Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields and ending at the famous Cavern Club.  The last part of the afternoon is free to enjoy the fabulous shopping opportunities of the city centre.

FRIDAY – First stop is the Metropolitan Cathedral, completed in 1967 and housing arguably the world’s largest stained glass window.  A new visitor centre allows you to admire the spectacular architecture (1 hour stay).  Later we visit the Liverpool Cathedral, the largest in the UK and largest Anglican cathedral in Europe.  It has the world’s highest gothic arches, largest organ, highest and heaviest peel of bells – at the top of the 330 ft tower is a viewing platform.  (Stay 2 hours).  We leave Liverpool early afternoon and drive back to Dorset, arriving home later that evening.
