A stunning new footbridge, 55 metres above the sea, now provides step free access to Tintagle headland for the first time in 500 years.

The name of Tintagel immediately conjures images of King Arthur and the legends associated with him. The blackened ruins of Tintagel Castle brood over the coast, but no-one can say for sure whether this was really the place where Uther Pendragon seduced the Queen of Cornwall. Whatever the truth of the matter, it has always been a mystical and atmospheric place to visit.  Set on the rugged North Cornwall coast, Tintagel Castle is one of the most spectacular historic sites in Britain. But the path to the castle has long been challenging, with over a hundred steps winding towards to the cliff-top ruins. English Heritage have now built a new footbridge at Tintagel Castle, recreating the historic crossing from the mainland to the headland which collapsed 500 years ago. The bridge design sees two cantilevers reach out and meet, not quite touching, with a 40mm gap in the middle. The gap represents the transition from the mainland to the island, present to past. The bridge is paved with Cornish Delabole slate, with stainless steel balustrades fitted along its length. The balustrades have been designed to be so fine that, when viewed from a distance, they disappear against the sky. A timed admission system is in place so you are guaranteed entry without being too crowded.

There will be time to enjoy the attractive village of Tintagel itself - "the most beautiful village in North Cornwall" - with a wide variety of gift shops, cafes and pubs - usually decked out in bunting during the summer.
