Sitting astride the main route to Europe which brought Romans, royals and writers here down the centuries, this is an area steeped in history and rich in culture

The Medway Towns lie clustered around the estuary of the River Medway on the North Kent coast. Populated since Saxon times and sitting astride the main road to Europe which brought Romans, royals and writers here down the centuries, it is steeped in history and rich in culture. Whether it is Medways fantastic maritime heritage and military connections or to explore the places that Charles Dickens wrote about, you’ll find an area packed full of interest and variety.

ITINERARY

Monday - Morning departure from Dorset to Emmetts Garden near Sevenoaks - a 19th century hillside garden on one of the highest spots in Kent. Continue to hotel at Chatham where dinner awaits.

Tuesday - Visit Rochester, most famous of the Medway towns. With the Castle, Cathedral and Victorian high street all within a 5 minute walk of each other there is plenty of historical interest. Dinner is taken back in the hotel then afterwards we are visited by The Medway Queen Preservation Society who will give a fascinating presentation on this nearly 100 year old Paddle Steamer, heroine of Dunkirk and currently under restoration at Gillingham Pier.

Wednesday - Visit the Medway Queen, raised from the bottom of the Medway River and now under restoration - a work in progress. The visitor centre showcases her history, tells the stories and displays artefacts. Later we shall visit The Historic Dockyard at Chatham, the birthplace of many famous fighting ships - the dockyards were used as film set for the popular "Call the Midwife" tv series.

Thursday - Morning to Scotney Castle and gardens - the naturalistic plantings seem untouched by human hands and create a fairytale feel with autumn colours reflected in the old castle moat. This afternoon we shall visit the Bedgebury Pinetum - 350 acres of mixed broadleaf and pine forest - started by the Beresford Hope family in 1840 and now run jointly by Kew Gardens.

Friday - Homeward bound we pause in Winchester. Return to Dorset late afternoon.
