A most unusual day out - Cruise down the River Thames to visit The Cathedral of Sewage with its restored Victorian Beam Engines in full steam!

Two thousand years ago the Romans enjoyed indoor plumbing, but until a couple of hundred years ago Londoners were still emptying their chamber pots out of the window. In 1858 a long hot summer turned the River Thames into “The Great Stink” and it was decided something had to be done. Enter Joseph Bazalgette who built the now famous and massive London Sewers, the Thames Embankment and Steam powered sewerage works - a remarkable feat of civil engineering.

This most unusual day out features a cruise on the Thames (formerly an open sewer) from Bazalgette's Victoria Embankment to Greenwich - passing the famous London landmark sights along the way. We are escorted by a specialist local guide who will impart facts about the development of the Victorian sewers that cleaned up the city so markedly - as well as other fascinating tit-bits.  The highlight of our trip is a visit to Crossness Pumping Station near Woolwich - completely restored to its former Victorian glory and complete with beam engines pumping in full steam - an event that only occasionally occurs.  A ploughmans lunch followed by cake and tea is also included in the cafe here.

Crossness Pumping Station – The Cathedral of Sewage

Discover spectacular restored ornamental Victorian cast ironwork, possibly the world’s largest surviving beam engines which will be in steam and working today, a museum and a social story. Built on the Thames Marshes near Woolwich, The Cathedral of Sewage stored London’s waste until it was pumped back into the river and swept out to sea by the tide. This was before bacteria had been discovered or even understood. The workers cottages were built above the sewage storage tanks and they grew the most amazing and flavorsome tomatoes! Come and see this extraordinary site for yourself and celebrate the genius of a remarkable engineer.
