So many fitting and evocative names have been used to describe the region straddling the French/Italian border - "The Riviera of Flowers" and "The Coast of the Setting Sun" to name a few .....

Straddling the French-Italian border is a breathtaking length of coastline renowned for its mild climate, wonderful botanic gardens and flowers, stunning views and gastronomic treasures.  Peppered with brightly coloured houses, chic ports and charming fishing villages, it is a region offering a remarkable cultural and historical legacy. Known as “The coast of the setting sun” it is an area of great contrasts from the golden beaches and glamourous resorts to ancient medieval villages. Our tours around the region will be escorted by English speaking guides (with wireless headsets) who know all the stories, facts and figures, and whose expertise will allow us to get a bit more native with their invaluable local knowledge.

ITINERARY

Saturday - Very early morning departure from Dorset via Eurotunnel crossing to Calais and onwards through France for overnight hotel stay in Dijon area. 3 star with dinner and breakfast.

Sunday - Continuing southwards to the Mediterranean Sea with a welcome drink and porterage of bags on arrival in Alassio.

Monday - Visit San Remo, oldest climatic spa resort on "The Riviera of Flowers" - sumptuous parks, palm lined promenades and elegant shopping streets. This afternoon travel into the Ligurian hinterland - a quieter landscape of olive groves, vineyards and small towns. Stop at medieval Dolceacqua, where a charming bridge and narrow alleyways lead to the castle above. Artists enliven the appearance of the town and the regions best wine is produced hereabout. We shall enjoy an olive oil tasting and learn about their production.

Tuesday - A guided tour of Nice (walking) - an elegant and popular city, proud of its past and independence. Its monuments, churches and gardens will seduce you with a unique light and gentle climate. See the harbour, the luxury "Negresco Hotel" and colourful flower market. The afternoon is free to explore Alassio - it has one of the best beaches on the Riviera, an uncountable number of ancient churches, narrow cobbled streets and plenty of shops.

Wednesday - To Genoa, indescribably beautiful, magnificent and distinctive, so described by composer Richard Wagner. It's museums and palaces are stuffed full of priceless treasures - a local guide will show us around the sights. Later we board the "Appennine Express" Train travelling a 15 mile narrow gauge route inland to the village of Casella - passing forts, valleys, woods, and ancient villages along the way. It fights its way uphill to 470 metres above sea-level to reach its goal an hour later - where we rejoin our coach to return to Alassio.

Thursday - Drive over the Franco-Italian border to the Principality of Monaco, city of the rich and famous. Set atop a rock peak and dominated by the Prince's palace and cathedral, you can choose to visit the Museum of Oceanography or the famous Casino. On the way back call into a traditional perfumery to experience the true scent of luxury.

Friday - Reluctantly leaving the Mediterranean we head northwards, back through France for overnight hotel near Dijon with dinner and breakfast.

Saturday - Homeward bound to Calais for afternoon Eurotunnel crossing to UK, and return to Dorset late that evening.
