The borderlands between England and Wales who distinctive geography has isolated this sparsely populated slice of land and created a unique identity.

The borderland between England and Wales has a distinctive geography which has isolated this rural, sparsely populated slice of land and created a unique identity. “Anglo-Welshness” is a hybrid of town names from both countries. The region is a hidden delight: mountains and moorland, wooded river valleys, tiny villages, half-timbered buildings and castles all exist side by side. The region has long been an area of contention – the native Welsh refusing to gracefully submit to Norman control in the 11th century and thus the proliferation of magnificent medieval castles.

ITINERARY

Monday - Morning departure from Dorset crossing the Severn Bridge and through the beautiful Wye Valley to Hereford for lunch. Continue to our hotel near Telford where dinner awaits.

Tuesday - Drive through Much Wenlock and follow a scenic drive along the 15 mile Wenlock Edge, to Church Stretton, sometimes called "Little Switzerland". Continue to Ludlow, still set around its original medieval street plan which contains nearly 500 listed buildings. After time for lunch we shall be joined by a member of the local History Society who will escort a walking tour around the town this afternoon - history, architecture and life in the town is spiced up with some gossip! A fascinating insight to an official "slow town" which avoids the hustle of modern life.

Wednesday - Shrewsbury is one of the most beautiful medieval towns packed with timber framed black and white buildings, narrow streets and alleyways. It has over 600 listed buildings including the castle and abbey. We have included a boat cruise on the River Severn that forms a great loop around the town - the skipper will point out the sights and tea & biscuits are included.

Thursday - Visit Oswestry, a town emerging from the mists of time into a landscape rich in folklore and history. The meeting of cultures sparks a certain creativity and the local crafts reflect this in the shops. After lunch continue deeper into the borderlands until we finally reach Welshpool "where Wales begins!" Visit Powis Castle, (c1200) perched high on a rock overlooking the beautiful terraced gardens - home of Clive of India.

Friday - Calling into the beautiful cathedral city of Worcester for lunch. Return to Dorset by early evening.
