A special place so long off the holiday map and now returned to peace. We have included "One of the most beautiful railway journeys in the World"

To witness the drama of Ireland’s Causeway Coast and Glens is to walk with ancient forces and experience an unsurpassed blend of majesty and sheer beauty.  You won’t just travel through the land, but will take a journey of the spirit.  This is a special place, for so long off the holiday map, now happily returned to peace and offering a unique experience. The diversity of the sculpted landscape, under wide bright skies and ever-changing light, is sharpened by the rare purity of its air; refreshing and invigorating.

To enhance your enjoyment of this special place we have included “One of the most beautiful railway journeys in the world” – so considered by Michael Palin.

ITINERARY

SATURDAY - Morning departure from Dorset northwards to Carlisle area for overnight stay in 3 star hotel with dinner.

SUNDAY - Drive along the Solway Coast to Cairnryan. Join the afternoon ferry (2 hrs) to Larne and make the 30 minute drive to our hotel at Dunadry with welcome shortbread and tea/coffee on arrival.

MONDAY - "The most beautiful train journey". We drive to Coleriane and board the NIR train to Derry. The track runs alongside the sands so we have spectacular views of the most unspoilt beaches in Ireland. On the opposite side we pass the maritime cliffs of Downhill and the impressive Binevenagh Mountain. On arrival in Derry we shall be met by a local guide for a walking tour of this compact and fascinating city - the only complete walled city in Ireland. It is full of historical buildings, unique attractions and great views.
The afternoon is free to make your own discoveries - don't miss the political murals of The Bogside and Free Derry museum which tells the story of the NI conflicts - thought provoking.

TUESDAY - A spectacular drive along the Antrim coast, widely regarded as one of the finest marine drives in Europe. Visit the Old Bushmills Distillery, the oldest whiskey producer in Ireland. Enjoy a guided tour showing the process - there is a café for lunch. Later we shall visit the extraordinary Giant's Causeway, a UNESCO Heritage Site. It has inspired artists, stirred scientific debate and captured the imagination of all who see it. The mystery and stories are explained in the award winning visitor centre.

WEDNESDAY - Glenarm Castle walled gardens are one of the oldest in Ireland, originally created to provide food for the castle. Now they are filled with colourful flowers and exciting plants throughout the seasons. They contain the Mount (viewpoint), Sculptures, a Yew Circle, Herb Garden, Water Features, a Hot Border, Glasshouses even an Obelisk. Our return journey is all about the scenery as we tour along the coast towards Larne and under The Black Arch.

THURSDAY - There is a treat in store today with a rare visit to the Queen's official residence in Northern Ireland, Hillsborough Castle. After a guided tour of the elegant mansion including the throne room and gardens, morning tea and scones will be served. There will be free time to explore the town itself. Finish the day with a tour of Ferguson's Irish Linen at Banbridge, producers of the finest damask table linen, as used by HM The Queen.

FRIDAY - A short visit to Carrickfergus with its wide seaside promenade and impressive castle, on our way back to the ferry at Larne. Afternoon sailing to Cairnryan (2 hrs) and drive back to Carlisle area for overnight stay.

SATURDAY - Homewards via motorways to arrive back in Dorset that evening.
