There's nowhere else on earth quite like the North York Moors National Park. Where else can you experience a landscape of desolate moorland, ancient abbeys and picturesque villages existing side by side in such perfect harmony? It's a living scene that will take your breath away. Picturesque, tranquil and wonderful – comprising over 1,400 square miles of natural beauty it is, quite literally, a breath of fresh air.  Our tour will get you of the beaten track to explore ridges of bleak heather, pine forests, rolling hills and a shimmering coastline, not to mention a human landscape of historic landmarks, cultural and heritage attractions.

ITINERARY

Thursday - Morning departure from Dorset travelling northwards, with stops as appropriate for refreshment, to Middlesborough.

Friday - First stop is the Moors National Park Centre at Danby, a tiny village idyllically set on the banks of the River Esk. Here you will discover what makes this region so special. Continue along country lanes through pretty Lealholm to Whitby, a traditional seaside resort with plenty of places for lunch - fish and chips being a locally specialty! This afternoon drive along the spectacular Yorkshire coastline to the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum - a unique insight into the lives and work of miners who toiled underground. A guided visit includes original buildings, artefacts and candle lit tunnels - fascinating stuff!

Saturday - Cross the Cleveland Hills through Bilsdale to Rievaulx. Hidden in the valley of the River Rye are the beautiful and tranquil abbey ruins that reflect 1000 years of spiritual and romantic history. We continue to Hutton-le-Hole, and a visit to the Ryedale Folk Museum - history is quite literally brought to life here. Historic buildings rescued from dereliction and reconstructed with unique heritage collections. After lunch we get into the heart of the moors on narrow roads with uninterrupted panoramic views for miles. Stop for photos at the Lion Inn on Blakey Ridge, the highest point on the moors. Descend from the moors into the village of Castleton and so return to Middlesborough.

Sunday - Drive past Thirsk and ascend the Sutton Bank - the view from near the Visitor Centre is said to be "the finest in England". Continue to the market town of Malton and visit The Eden Camp Museum - Britain at War! Experience the sights, sounds and smells of wartime Britain set in an original prisoner of war camp - capturing the spirit, sacrifice and humour of a nation at war. Returning across the moors to Middlesborough.

Monday - Homewards with stops for refreshment to arrive in Dorset early evening.
