The steam heritage railways of Wales are a very special way to enjoy some of the finest, most ancient and hauntingly beautiful scenery in the British isles.

One of the most ancient and hauntingly beautiful areas in Europe. Called Eryri in Welsh (“the place of eagles”), Snowdonia welcomes visitors to a breathtaking natural environment. The steam heritage railways of Wales are a very special way to enjoy some of the finest scenery in the British isles – all are narrow gauge, some spanning a history of well over 150 years.  You can hear the whistles of the engines and see their plumes of smoke from miles away – close up they appear as ferocious dragons – whilst from a distance they seem like a giant’s train set, lost in the enormous landscapes.  The special attraction of these lines lies in their modest size, but do not be fooled – these are hard working, powerful engines which look, sound and smell glorious in this beautiful environment.

ITINERARY

Monday - Morning departure from Dorset with stops for refreshment to Llanberis with a welcome cuppa while the bags are portered.

Tuesday - Morning visit to Portmeirion, a magical Italianate style village in a stunning sub-tropical garden overlooking the rugged Welsh coast. It found fame as setting for the 1960s TV location of "The Prisoner". This afternoon from nearby Porthmadog we ride on the Ffestiniog Railway and make the climb to over 700 ft - passing waterfalls and lakes, forest and farms - the trains work hard to reach their destination of Blaenau Ffestiniog. This has to be the ultimate heritage railway journey in Wales - steam and scenery combined through the very heart of Snowdonia!

Wednesday - Visit Llandudno, a resort seemingly locked in a time-warp and still retaining much of its lovely Victorian character. We include a ride on the funicular tramway to the top of the Great Orme headland for sensational views over the town and out to sea. A short stop at charming Betws-y-Coed completes the day.

Thursday - The morning is free in Llanberis giving you the opportunity to join a morning train to the summit of Snowdon if you wish (recommend you pre-book) or exploring some of the many attractions in the town. This afternoon we make the short drive to Beddgelert and join a train on the famous Welsh Highland Railway. The train snakes and climbs through the breathtaking scenery of Snowdonia to the summit of the line near Rhyd Ddu. It then descends towards the coast with views of Anglesey to terminate in Caernarfon.

Friday - Homeward bound with a stop in historic Tewkesbury. Return to Dorset early evening.
