Based in the Scottish Borders and combining Scotland's beautiful Capital city with a ride on the UK's newest railway built for over 100 years

Edinburgh’s beauty is both staggering and inimitable – but the city is far more than just a pretty face. From  the rich – sometimes hidden – history that surrounds your every step, to the lush green spaces peppered throughout the city centre, Edinburgh continually delights, surprises and inspires. Located deep in the Scottish Borders the holiday includes a rail journey on  the longest new railway to be built in the UK for over 100 years – the 35 mile long scenic Borders Railway.

ITINERARY

Sunday - Early Morning departure from Dorset, driving northwards to Peebles where tea/coffee & biscuits will welcome you while your bags are taken to the room. You will receive a booklet on the history of the hotel.

Monday - Morning visit to Floors Castle near Kelso, largest inhabited castle in Scotland and home to the Duke of Roxburghe. Discover the castle's history and view its many treasures. Lunch is taken in Jedburg. This afternoon we visit Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott created over 200 years ago. It is full of unique artefacts and objects that inspired his poems and novels.

Tuesday - To New Lanark World Heritage Site - a beautifully restored 18th century cotton mill village, close to the Falls of Clyde. Discover how people lived and worked back in the 1800s - fascinating! Return to Pebbles after lunch with some time to discover the town.

Wednesday - Our morning begins in Edinburgh, with our first visit being the magnificent castle. Perched atop an extinct volcano the 12th century castle overlooks the city and guards many of the nation's treasures, including the Scottish Crown jewels. There will be free time to stroll The Royal Mile, Princess Street and Queen Street. Later this afternoon we drive to Waverley Station to join the new Borders Railway for a 1 hour journey through former mining towns, wide open farmland and lush valleys that the Borders are famous for. Opened by The Queen in 2015 at a cost of £294 million. The coach meets us at Tweedbank station for return to Pebbles.

Thursday - Homewards bound, due south - to return to Dorset by that evening.
