Steam trains through the Mendip Countryside. Includes a Day Rover Ticket and entry to the Signal Box, Engine Shed, Miniature Railway & Gallery. Optional extra to drive a steam engine yourself!

The East Somerset Railway is a 2.5 mile heritage railway in Somerset, running between Cranmore and Mendip Vale. Prior to the Beeching Axe, the railway was once part of the former Cheddar Valley line, meeting the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway at Wells. Now safely preserved and staffed mainly by enthusiastic volunteers it runs steam and heritage diesels through the delightful Mendip countryside on a 40 minute round trip.  Your visit today will include a Rover ticket meaning you can ride the line as many times as you like, and gives access to the preserved Signal box, the Engine shed, miniature railway and art gallery.  There is a souvenier/model shop and a cafe on site.

For just £10.00 extra you can have a go at taking the controls of a steam locomotive yourself - one of the qualified and experienced drivers will welcome you onto the footplate at the sidings next to the engine shed, show you the wonderful array of dials and controls and what it takes to drive these beautiful feats of engineering. Then you can blow the whisle and away you go, absorbing the thrill of driving a steam engine for yourself! It is an amazing Joy!
