Half a milion fragrant begonias form a rich and vivid palette of colours in the "most beautiful square in the world" - we include entry to the town hall balcony for a birds-eye view.

For just 3 days every other summer Brussels hosts its famed Carpet of Flowers right in The Grand Square. A chance to stroll across “the most beautiful square in the world”, a jewel of magnificent gothic architecture and to inhale the fragrant scent of the begonias from which the carpet is formed – all half a million of them! A rich palette of colours, from bright vivid to delicate pastels and white are formed into a 75 metre long by 24 metre wide giant floral puzzle by over 100 volunteers, who amazingly complete the task in only 8 hours. It can be viewed free of charge from ground-level, but we have included a ticket up to the balcony of the Town Hall giving a much better “birds-eye” view.

ITINERARY

Saturday - Morning departure from Dorset for midday Eurotunnel crossing to Calais and onwards into Belgium. Arriving in Mehelen late afternoon and after settling in enjoy dinner.

Sunday - Morning at leisure in Mechelen - the medieval town centre is just 5 minutes stroll from the hotel. At 12 noon we shall enjoy a buffet lunch in the hotel (in lieu of dinner). This afternoon to Brussels for the show-stopper Carpet of Flowers with an included afternoon time-slot ticket to view it from the Town Hall balcony - don't forget your camera! The hearty begonia lends beauty and freshness to the display and is resistant to all weather conditions - sun, wind or cold. Set at the centre of the stunning Grand-Place which was rebuilt after being totally destroyed by the French Army in 1695, it is now a UNESCO world heritage site. Stay for the spectacular evening fireworks and musical concert - return to hotel late that night.

Monday - Enjoy a lie-in and late breakfast. The day is free to further explore the city - visit the Palace of the Grand Council (UNESCO), take a drink on the "Fish Market", visit the Kazerne Dossin museum commemorating the Nazi occupation, The Bruul is Mechelen's main shopping street and has many fine buildings, The Botanic Gardens are right in the city centre, there are pretty riverside walks or the really energetic can climb to the top of St Rumbold's Tower for a panoramic view. Dinner in the hotel this evening.

Tuesday - Leave the hotel this morning and drive to Ypres, site of intense fighting in WW2. This can be experienced in the "In Flanders Fields Museum" located in the Cloth Hall on the main square. Nearby is the moving Menin Gate memorial to the missing. Resume after lunch to Eurotunnel for afternoon crossing back to the UK and return to Dorset that evening.
