Sightseeing aboard the Little Land Trains around one of the "Most Beautful Bays in the World"

Nicknamed La Petite Mer (The Little Sea), embedded in the temperate southern coast of Brittany, the Gulf of Morbihan has been voted one of the “Most Beautiful Bays in the World”. The stunning coast is dotted with colourful ports, sheltered beaches and dramatic cliffs. Off-shore islands are natural paradises surrounded by lagoon-blue water and will appeal to your inner Robinson Crusoe. Historic walled towns with their narrow alleyways and medieval half-timbered houses are best discovered on foot, although there is another option …. We have included sightseeing tours on three of the regions Little Land Trains which can access the picturesque streets and take you to the best viewpoints.  Bumping along merrily over ancient cobbles while listening to an English commentary uncovering some of the mysteries and history of the region – “c’est formidable!”

Monday - Early morning departure to Poole to join the 08:30 Brittany Ferry sailing to Cherbourg. Arrive 13:45 and drive through Normandy and into Brittany to arrive Vannes in time for dinner.

Tuesday - The best introduction to the city of Vannes is on the panoramic land-train. Climb aboard this morning and discover its 2000 year history, view the gardens and ramparts, winding through narrow streets down to the harbour. An amazing 272 historic monuments are contained within the city walls including the museum of fine arts, Gaillard Castle and St Peter's Cathedral. This afternoon is free to make your own discoveries.

Wednesday - Carnac is a must-see destination in Morbihan - the largest collection of megalithic stones in Europe - more than 4000 have been counted. Discover the world's most beautiful Neolithic site on the land-train that shows you the breathtaking and mysterious stones, views the nearby white sand beaches and takes you past the pretty harbour of La Trinitie sur Mer. There will be time for lunch in Carnac old town - you must go into the 17th century St Cornely church to view the amazing painted ceiling. This afternoon we drive to nearby Locmariaquer, a small seaside village from which boat cruises operate on the sheltered waters of The Gulf of Morbihan. Our skipper will show us some of the 42 beautiful islands, explain oyster farming, fishing and point out the wildlife that abounds here.

Thursday - To Quiberon, France's equivalent of Portland - a peninsula connected to the mainland by a thin spit of land just 20 metres wide and surrounded by the ocean. There are panoramic sea-views of the Atlantic, wide fine beaches, cliffs and rocky coves. Our trip on the land-train here is nicknamed "The Cockscrew" and it shows you the two sides of Quiberon - the gentle bay side and the more rugged western side, often called The Wild Coast. On the way back you will go past Port Maria, a busy fishing port where ferries ply to the islands off-shore. We shall spend the afternoon in Quiberon - stroll the promenade or relax in one of the sea-front pavement cafes - it's an idyllic spot.

Friday - Heading homewards back across Brittany to Cherbourg. Joining the afternoon ferry crossing to Poole which arrives 21:45. Return to home area late that night.
