Beyond Hardian's Wall is a region of far horizons and inviting open spaces, steeped in history and voted England's most tranquil region - North Northumbria is where England meets Scotland.

Beyond Hadrians Wall there is a region of far horizons and inviting open spaces, steeped in history and voted England’s most tranquil region.  North Northumbria is the border region where England meets Scotland, the northern limit of the Roman Empire and later location of many border battles which has left a stunning architectural legacy.  There are more castles here than anywhere else in England, which stand sentinel to a bloody and turbulent past.  In contrast England’s first Christian community was established on the magical Holy Island of Lindisfarne.

ITINERARY

Monday - Morning departure from Dorset, northwards to Northumberland where a warm welcome and dinner awaits.

Tuesday - History and Heritage come alive on the Ford & Etal Estate. First stop is the Heatherslaw Visitor Centre which provides a background to the historic estate. Afterwards we shall be introduced to the water powered Cornmill. Next join the Heatherslaw Steam Railway to nearby Etal with time for lunch and to visit the ruins of the haunting Etal Castle. Then a short drive by coach to the village of Ford, where we visit Lady Waterford Hall, beautifully decorated with hand painted Bible scenes.

Wednesday - Visit Bamburgh Castle, the ancient Royal seat of the Kings of Northumbria. These formidable walls have witnessed royal rebellion, bloody battles, spellbinding legends and frequent visits from film crews. Return to Alnwick with the afternoon free to wander the cobbled streets and maybe visit the famous Alnwick Castle or Alnwick Gardens.

Thursday - A day on Lindisfarne. Sited atop the volcanic mound, Lindisfarne Castle is a renowned sight visible from many miles around. Holy Island Village provides much interest, including a visitor centre, the ruined priory, Gertrude Jeyyll Garden, and some simply spectacular walks. Access to the island is subject to tides and the day of this visit may be swapped.

Friday - Reluctantly leaving this secret corner of England to head homewards, returning to Dorset by the evening.
