This fascinating day explores the scenery surrounding the Chilterne Hills and Grand Union Canal cruising through rural Berkshire. Experience the Golden Age of Steam at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, one of the largest railway collections in the country with famous trains and extensive visitor facilities. OUTLINE ITINERARY Depart from : Chickerell 06:40 - Portland 07:00 - Weymouth 07:30 - Dorchester 07:55 A short comfort stop at the Services – 15 mins. Arrive at Pitstone Wharfe on the Grand Union Canal by 11:15. Boat departs 11:30 A 2 hour cruise heads south, ascending two locks and enjoys lovely scenery. Turn and return. Lunch is available in the Waterside Café or bring a picnic to eat on the canal-side. Leave Pitstone at 14:15 and drive to the Bucks Railway Centre at Quainton – arrive 14:45 A working steam museum with full size steam engines and vintage carriages – some of historical importance. You may take unlimited train rides on the half mile demo-line. Sited on a 25 acre site, many exhibits are undercover in the new Visitor Centre. Leave at 17:30. Stop at Services for tea – 45 mins. Home to Weymouth by 22:00 |
